Joker in the Pack

That's what we call "massaging an archetype." Not quite sure what makes Madoff so unique, though. Maybe it's simply a question of scale.

I would suppose that image came about in light of "The Dark Knight".
(intended)

In that flick the character of "The Joker" stole the money of "Bad Men" for his own chaotic bonfire.
Madoff's biggest losers were corporate Barons and other Wall-Streeters - the money changers - and what the average person might consider the 'White Collar' 'Bad Men'.

We could take it one step further to the actor that played The Joker, Heath LEDGER.
A Ledger is a journal of business transactions and accounting records.
The Ledgers are what would be reviewed in legal cases regarding fraudelent business transactions.

At least that's my take on it.
