Well, this is fascinating: The DC series Trinity (meaning Supes, Bats and Wondie) is apparently weekly now. Three covers from last month pictured the three heroes of the Trinity as stained-glass icons surrounded by votive candles.
And then there's this cover of Superman by Alex Ross that does the father/son version of Pieta that we looked at in the Obam the Hawk update-a-thon....
Fascinating. You know I've taken some heat from some fanboys for my musings on superheroes as our new gods, but I'm seeing this meme playing out all over the place lately....

Remember the Steranko story that concluded Superman #400? I can't find it right now, but I think that it fits your ideas quite well.
I don't see many other ways of looking at superheros other than a rebirth of the gods of old.
The new Star Trek movie looks like a primer for the planet's move to pierce that cosmic envelope. The new cinematic trailer rocks like a bitch too.
