Here's an interesting gallery of UFO art, mainly from the Medieval and Renaissance era. Nothing new for most of us, but a handy rejoinder for all of this scurrilous nonsense floating around about UFOs never being sighted before WWII. Link courtesy of The Daily Grail..

Quite thorough and learned explanations. I appreciate the specialized knowledge one needs in order to assess those paintings in the proper context.
Yeah, I've seen all of that ages ago and find it incredibly unconvincing. Where did the symbols come from? What is the original inspiration for these depictions? The example in the image in this post is particularly unconvincing. They are in fact not similar- depicting a face in the moon is a totally different image with a totally different effect than depicting a full figure in a vehicle.
That what cracks me up- of course this is based on established symbolism, but where does the symbolism come from in the first place? Were these symbols passed on to us a priori, or did they have another inspiration? The bishops didn't know from aircraft. They- and everyone else- would automatically assume anything in the sky was supernatural.
By the way, I second Terry's recommendation for the UFO mystic link- there are some excellent, highly detailed rebuttals in the comments section.
Really awesome stuff. I remember first learning about medieval ufos from Unsolved Mysteries waaay back in the day.
Salute!
