What was this UFO vid done for?

This is an amazing piece of work, but I can't find any definitive information who made it and why. I read some theories it was a viral marketing campaign, which sounds right but I can't find any reference who it was for. Amazing work, but obviously not real UFOs (way too articulated and Hollywood). Let me know if you have the backstory on this.

Is that Lena Headey gasping? Leaked footage from Friday's sayonara episode of SARAH CONNOR? Could be Tobago, could be Palmdale.

alleged viral video promotion from the folks around Cloverfield

there was a few weeks exposure on forums, mostly about authenticity - the Cloverfield claim and focus shifted to the upcoming film

Maybe my memory plays tricks, but could it have been some viral marketing for a console game? Wish I remember....

Doing some reasearch I now remember what i read about it...Some people were suggesting it was a promotional campaign for a 3D design software, particularly good for creating external surroundings and plants, called VUE 6....
But it could just be that VUE6 was just the software the video was done with...so the "why"'s still a mistery...

It did the rounds a year and a half ago and turned out to be Just Some Guy experimenting with his animation software (I looked at it here). However, I think the details might make people here sit up and take notice:

The 35-year-old Barzolff is a professional animator who attended one of the most prestigious art schools in France and has a decade of experience with computer graphics and commercial animation.

...

The videos, he said, were intended as research for a feature film project he's been working on with Partizan, the France- based production company responsible for, among others, Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

When contacted to verify the story, "Eternal Sunshine" producer Georges Bermann said it was all true, and that Barzolff was "an absolute genius" who could "make anything look entirely real."

...

The movie Barzolff is working on for the big screen is about two guys who create a UFO hoax so realistic that it spirals out of their control.

...

Barzolff stressed the videos were not intended as a viral marketing ploy. His movie is still in the idea phase, and he created the hoax strictly as a "sociological experiment" -- in other words, just to see what would happen.

What happened far exceeded his expectations.

Sooooooo perhaps not just Just Some Guy. ;)

NWO wanted to get an idea of what the after-math of the announcement would look like, so the hired Barzolff to make the clip.
