Tom Hanks and Ron Howard sugarcoat the history of the Illuminati for this Angels & Demons puff-piece. Pretty silly, but interesting in a subtextual sense given the career arc of these two characters. They fail to mention that secret sects and authoritarian religious institutions are identical in spirit - they are ego-based constructions ultimately dedicated to the total control of we, the "Unenlightened" and/or "Unsaved." It's all about using fear to keep us trapped in a reactionary, determinist mindset, what Philip K. Dick called the "Black Iron Prison."

Philip K. Dick also famously wrote: "Probably the real, secret Christian church still exists, long underground, with the living Corpus Christi as its head or ruler, the members absorbed into it. Through participation in it they probably have vast, seemingly magical powers."

Which brings up the question: Why are they releasing movies with these themes at this time, when it seems like the poo is about to hit the fan? It was understandable back in the '60s and '70s, but now it's like they're begging us to be into this whole "looming, dark spiritual overlord" theme...
"Probably the real, secret Christian church still exists, long underground..."
Yes.
Solar Alignments Cause 'Manhattanhenge' This Weekend

I thought that the film was full of coded references to 9/11 - most especially how the calligraphy of "Illuminati" as shown in the film can function as a mirror image. The 9/11 letters have a similar property.
It was also all about a false flag terrorist attack, and a charismatic young male killing the old father in order to come to power. Lots of mythic/Masonic/historical themes there.
I just found this gem
"For 15 minutes around sunset on two days this summer, the sun will set in exact alignment with the cross streets of Manhattan's street grid, making the city's towering buildings function something like a modern-day Stonehenge."
