Lost in 1947...

Lost in Space is pure kitsch, but this particularly episode caught my eye. The Jupiter II lands back on Earth, but due to a time warp the landing date is October 17, 1947.

Interesting year for a flying saucer to show up in rural America, no? This time it's Michigan where the close encounter takes place, but still. I wonder if the writer was processing another UFO encounter (of sorts) from that year...

Looks as though the episode aired in 1967. Interesting that it's set in Michigan, because a major UFO sighting occurred just a year earlier in the small college town of Hillsdale, Michigan (just a half-hour north of my hometown in Ohio). I believe it's the incident that made "swamp gas" an (in)famous explanation for UFO sightings, and where J. Allen Hynek had his "Road to Damascus" experience.

As a "side note," Hillsdale College has been hailed as a bastion of conservative values within academia. It did, however, get a major black eye in 1999.

The daughter-in-law of George Roche III (the university's president and conservative hob-nobber) was found dead, apparently from suicide. Turns out that Roche was having an affair with her. In March 2000, the whole sordid story was recounted in Vanity Fair.

My dad graduated from Hillsdale College in 1950, on the GI bill.

So he would have been there in 1947.

Also, the football team was un-defeated in '47...
