The hidden face of Nefertiti

BERLIN – Researchers in Germany have used a modern medical procedure to uncover a secret within one of ancient Egypt's most treasured artworks — the bust of Nefertiti has two faces.

A team led by Dr. Alexander Huppertz, director of the Imaging Science Institute at Berlin's Charite hospital and medical school, discovered a detailed stone carving that differs from the external stucco face when they performed a computed tomography, or CT, scan on the bust.

The findings, published Tuesday in the monthly journal Radiology, are the first to show that the stone core of the statue is a highly detailed sculpture of the queen, Huppertz said.- AP

Giant laser experiment powers up

The US has finished constructing a huge physics experiment aimed at recreating conditions at the heart of our Sun. The US National Ignition Facility is designed to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear fusion, a process that could offer abundant clean energy.

The lab will kick-start the reaction by focusing 192 giant laser beams on a tiny pellet of hydrogen fuel. To work, it must show that more energy can be extracted from the process than is required to initiate it.

Professor Mike Dunne, who leads a European venture that is also pursuing nuclear fusion with lasers, told BBC News that if NIF was successful, it would be a "seismic event".

"It would mark the transition for laser fusion from 'physics' to 'engineering reality'," he said.

Two possibilities here: First, we are on the brink of entering a Star Trek scenario overnight. Or a Quiet Earth one.

All bets are off this year.

Orion debuts on 3/30

NAZCA NASA debuts the new Orion spaceship on 3/30. Hmm, 33, where's the 17?

Keep reading:

On March 30, 2009, NASA unveiled the new Orion Spacecraft in front of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The module is still undergoing tests, but is planned to make its first journey to the International Space Station in 2015.

War in Space? Mysteries over Virginia (UPDATE)

So, so much happening above our heads. I've wondered about the weird things falling from the skies being evidence of some sort of hostile action in high orbit, now we see more puzzling evidence above our heads:

A mysterious boom and light occurred over the skies of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va., on Sunday night, but just what caused the phenomenon is still unknown.

Calls from local residents to 911 began coming in at around 9:45 p.m. EDT, with some people reporting their doors and windows rattled when the boom went off, according to reports from WVEC-TV.

Similar reports in the past often have turned out to involve meteors, which can explode in the atmosphere to create a loud noise and bright flash of light that streaks across the sky. However, often times the source of events like this are not determined.

In a recent scientific first, meteorite fragments of an asteroid that was spotted in space before it exploded over the African desert in October were recently recovered and examined by scientists.

The jury is still out as to what caused Sunday's event.

Here's an interesting clue:

The National Weather Service released a statement at 11:17 p.m. Sunday:

"Numerous reports have been called in to this office and into local law enforcement concerning what appeared to be flashes of light in the sky over the Suffolk/Virginia Beach area. We are confident in saying that this was not lightning ... and have been in contact with military and other government agencies to determine the cause. So far ... we have not seen or heard of any damage from this and will continue to inquire as to the cause."

In contact with the military? Interesting. Many thanks to Miranda for the tip.

UPDATE: The mysterious boom and flash of light seen over parts of Virginia Sunday night was not a meteor, but actually exploding space junk from the second stage of a Russian Soyuz rocket falling back to Earth, according to an official with the U.S. Naval Observatory. - AP

I've never heard of such a thing. How about that?

David Gilmour supports UFO hacker

The extradition case of UFO hacker Gary McKinnon continues to attract power players to the cause. Recently we heard that human rights campaigner Terry Waite spoke in support of McKinnon and now David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has as well.

Besides being a legendary musician, Gilmour is one of the good guys in Rock. He's donated vast sums to charitable causes and has little use for the trappings of stardom.

Here's a real treat- Bowie dueting with Gilmour on "Comfortably Numb." I've been researching Bowie for my next book and I'm not entirely unconvinced that he doesn't have some strange DNA floating around in his system.

Horus Scorpion hosts Kids Choice Awards

A field report from SoapFan on the Nick Kids Choice Awards :

Host: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. His mission throughout the night to create the greatest slime explosion ever from an onstage volcano, announcer acknowledged "pyramid." There's a nod to Leo DiCaprio for Nick's Big Help Award for his help with all things green.

Get this: The Rock cross dresses as Miley Cyrus. Then he appears as an Hawaiian high priest to perform a ritual in front of the slime "pyramid." Oh and he needs a "key" which he takes from around Hugh Jackman's neck...it's a skull and bones key that Hugh says won't activate the "pyramid" but will open the door to a "john." LOL. So, still in search of a "key," The Rock calls on the volcano "pyramid" gods and the Jonas Brothers appear out of the smoke. They say they have no "real" key but can sing in the "key" of G. They do and the volcano "pyramid" erupts with slime.

Unbelievable!

BTW. A re-broadcast is raging right now. Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox appear to push Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Yahooccultism: Darkness, Darkness

Today, Discovery landed after a 13 day mission, bringing home Sandra Magnus who'd been in space for 134 days. How coincidental that Reader Orgone Gnostic turns our attention to this semiotically-supercharged Yahoo news item:

BONN, Germany – From an Antarctic research base to the Great Pyramids of Egypt and beyond, the world switched off the lights on Saturday for the second Earth Hour, dimming skyscrapers, city streets and some of the world's most recognizable monuments for 60 minutes to highlight the threat of climate change.

Unreal. Were they looking at the Piri Reis map at that base?

Time zone by time zone, nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries joined the event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund to dim nonessential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

An agreement to replace Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, is supposed to be reached in Copenhagen, Denmark, this December, and environmentalists' sense of urgency has spurred interest in this year's Earth Hour. Last year, only 400 cities participated; Sydney held a solo event in 2007.

Expires in 2012! Hilarity. And whose ox was gored during this darkness festival?

In Switzerland, the city of Geneva plans to switch off the lights on its theaters, churches and monuments. Among these are the Reformation Wall, where floodlights normally illuminate 10-foot (three-meter) statues of John Calvin and other leaders of Protestantism. The city's motto engraved on either side of the statues is: "After darkness, light."

I'm fascinated by this Earth Hour phrase, seeing that hour comes from Hora, which I believe is ultimately derived from Horus. But if this is a Horus ritual, where's our Hathor? Right here:

Earth Hour 2009 has garnered support from global corporations, nonprofit groups, schools, scientists and celebrities — including Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett and retired Cape Town Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

NASA and the life on Mars coverup

Kevin Smith (no, no that Kevin Smith) takes a long, hard look at NAZCA NASA's strange behavior on the Mars life issue over at Alien Seeker News. Money quote:
Evidence seems pretty conclusive that NASA has been doctoring photos from the Moon and Mars for years. Why would they do this? Very learned and credible critics of NASA say NASA is trying to hide evidence of past intelligent civilizations on these heavenly bodies. The arguments made by these critics can be very convincing, and NASA has offered little to no information to the contrary.

Clinton holding up worldwide UFO report?

Reader Tess dropped this link over at the Alien Project- this article is worth a look. As I mentioned in my comment, we've seen these kind of reports circulating for a long time (since the 50's, at least) but given the prevalence of alien and UFO themes in the news and in entertainment, it's worth at least being aware of:

Less than a week after a senior U.N. official confirmed that the U.N. Secretariat would hold a meeting on extraterrestrial policy if it were requested by a U.N. member nation, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s State Dept. and U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice’s offices will not even discuss the matter on the record.

On March 18, 2009, Juan Carlos Brandt, U.N. Chief of Advocacy and Special Events stated to this reporter, “If there is one (1) U.N. member state that would ask for a meeting on extraterrestrials, it would take place.” The office of the President of the 63rd U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, the former Sandinista foreign minister of Nicaragua (1979-90), also has confirmed to this reporter that it would support any U.N. member nation calling for implementation of UNGA Decision 33/426, which calls for coordination of research on “unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial life.”

On March 22, 2009, a U.S. ally, the U.K. Ministry of Defence released over 1200 previously secret files relating to UFOs and extraterrestrial life. On March 26, 2009, when reached by this reporter, neither Hillary Clinton’s nor Susan Rice’s offices nor their spokespersons would comment on the U.N. official’s statements, or on U.S. plans to support implementation of UNGA Decision 33/426.

The Thursday launch of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying the world's first repeat space tourist and a new crew for the International Space Station has boosted the population of space to its historical max: 13 people.

The population boom ties the record for the maximum number of people in space at the same time. It is relatively rare but could become more commonplace once the space station shifts to a larger, six-person crew in late May.

Witch Mountain: Disclosure Conditioning?

UFO Digest:

There have long been reports that Hollywood was recruited to help prepare people for a scenario in which we would need to be ready to deal with the idea of unusual visitors to Earth.

This is consistent with the cooperation between Hollywood and the U.S. defense and intelligence communities during World War II and in subsequent years on a variety of subjects.

Walt Disney allegedly was approached by the U.S. military in the 1950s about creating a movie on this subject. Work was reportedly begun on the film, but the plug was pulled for reasons that remain unclear.

Decades later, Steven Spielberg created CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Rumors still circulate that he, too, had government-related sources who whispered in his ear about real-life aspects of the UFO situation.

There is a long list of movies, TV shows and books that address the topics of UFOs, visitors from elsewhere and a range of other unconventional topics that could be related.

Even Army Air Corps veteran Jack Webb of TV's "Dragnet" created the series "Project UFO" which ran on NBC for two seasons in 1978 and 1979. The show followed the activities of two Air Force investigators of Project Bluebook, the real-life program of UFO case investigation, and/or part of the cover-up, according to some observers.

Migraine Fun Facts!

Whee, it's Migraine Day! You can join in the fun:

The oldest medical manuscript, the Ebers Papyrus, discovered at Thebes, Egypt, and dating between 1534 and 3000 BCE, has 12 prescriptions for headache and describes several different types of headache. Migraine was considered separately and was treated with the fish Siluris (an electric cat fish).

One headache preparation was prepared by the revered mother-goddess Isis herself for the sun god Ra:

The manuscript says: "A sixth remedy that Isis made for Ra himself to eliminate the disease that is in his head: fruit of coriander…made into a mass, honey is mixed with it, the head is bandaged therewith so that it goes immediately well with him."

Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" may have been inspired by migraine hallucinations. In 1999, two doctors published a paper in The Lancet suggesting that the bizarre characters and settings of the two books may have been been born out of migraine-induced visions.

In "Through the Looking Glass," Alice meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who agree to battle one another over a damaged rattle. As Alice helps them dress in rags and pots and pans, Tweedledum says: "Do I look very pale?" "Well — yes — a little," Alice replies. "I'm very brave, generally," Tweedledum continues, "Only to-day I happen to have a headache."

The church, which blends Christian and indigenous religious beliefs in Brazil, uses tea brewed from the ayahuasca plant in their services. The tea contains trace amounts of the chemical dimethyltryptamine or DMT.

C-17

(CNN) -- Emergency crews called off a search in Texas for the wreckage of a C-17 transport plane after reports Monday of a possible crash proved unfounded.

Callers to the Olney Police Department said they saw a low-lying plane, and a spokesman for Sheppard AFB initially reported a crash, but then retracted the report.

Air Force officials said an Air Force C-17 had been flying at low altitude near Olney, but the plane returned safely to Altus Air Force Base in southwest Oklahoma.

Bono's Strange Bedfellows

We looked at the odd discordant notes in U2's semiotic identity recently, and in a new piece on Counterpunch, veteran rock journalist Dave Marsh goes after Bono, hammer-and-tongs, for being the same kind of war-mongering hypocrite that all of our supposed "holy men" are. It's pretty brutal stuff, and actually speaks to my misgivings about the "Get On Your Boots" video:

Bono is no man of peace--he has yet to speak out against any war. Bono is part owner of Pandemic/Bioware, producers of Mercenaries 2, a video game which simulates an invasion of Venezuela. Last year Bono met with US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to discuss plans to set up a new U.S. military command for Africa. Forbes, the magazine Bono co-owns, constantly beats the drums for war (Bono says he was attracted to the magazine because it has a “consistent philosophy”).
Like Sir Bob, Bono sings the praises of some of the most warlike public figures. It starts with Dubya and Blair—Bono praised the UK prime minister for “doing the things he believed in.” He clearly meant to include massive British involvement in the war in Iraq. Bono also has nothing but praise for arch-reactionaries such as Jesse Helms and Billy Graham...surrounded by America’s most hawkish politicians, Bono gave a fawning keynote speech at the 2008 National Prayer Breakfast.

In a recent interview with the British music magazine Q, U2 drummer Larry Mullen said he “cringes” when he sees Bono hanging out with George Bush and Tony Blair, adding that those two world leaders should be tried as “war criminals.”

Will Russia Go First?

Russia is frantically trying to reverse a very sharp population decline. They've instituted a program to repatriate emigres which has seen only limited success so far.

But I often wonder if Russia hasn't done some genetic tampering with their population, given the fact the country (and other former satellites) is home to the world's highest concentration of beautiful young women. Will Russia take the plunge and set up breeding farms, where children are artificially conceived and raised by professional nurses, a la Brave New World? Countries have resorted to far more drastic measures to deal with existential threats...

NAZCA has money to burn...

Obviously, or why would they be planning a Venus probe?

Two high-altitude balloons built to hover in sulphuric acid clouds could be part of a future fleet of spacecraft sent to Venus, a NASA advisory team says.

The multi-billion-dollar mission concept – which is being considered for launch in the next fifteen years – could help reveal more about Venus's runaway greenhouse effect, any oceans it may once have had, and possible ongoing volcanic activity.

It could be the next flagship mission sent to a planet, after a planned mission to Jupiter and its moons set for launch in 2020.

The Venus mission would cost some $3 billion to 4 billion and would launch between 2020 and 2025, according to NASA, which in 2008 tasked a group of scientists and engineers to formulate goals for the mission.

Missions to the Moon or Mars, or even the lunar systems of the gas giants make sense to me, since they could be of some practical use to us. A mission to Venus seems pretty low on the priorities list to me. Unless you're talking about some Inanna/Ishtar/Hathor/Aphrodite ritual cycle bit, I guess.

Maybe Bernie Madoff funneled all of his billions to the space program.

Did You Go to Zeitgeist?

I completely blanked out on Zeitgeist Day, I didn't know it happened until yesterday. There were several smaller gatherings but the big show was in NYC. Here's a bit from the NY Times review:

As the evening labored on with a Power Point presentation, a panel talk with Mr. Fresco and a spirited question and answer session, some basic themes emerged: modern economics is a fraud; global debt will crush the planet; society itself is dying from the profit motive; and people ought to wise up to the fact that more than legislation — or presidential administrations — needs to change.

Can anyone seriously argue with any of those points? The question is now how do we address these issues. I'm not quite sure I can sign on with this solution yet:

That’s where Mr. Fresco came in, an author, lecturer and former aircraft engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio who has spent the last six decades working on the Venus Project, a futuristic society where (adjust your seatbelts, now) machines would control government and industry and safeguard the planet’s fragile resources by means of an artificially intelligent “earthwide autonomic sensor system” — a super-brain of sorts connected to, yes, all human knowledge.

But I am very encouraged that people are beginning to ask these questions, certainly. If any of you went, please share with us.

Tracy Twyman Speaks on Creation Myths, Gnostic and Otherwise...

Tracy Twyman is one of the top esoteric scholars in the world. The former editor of Dagobert's Revenge, Tracy more recently has published important works on the occult in our present times. Her two latest books are Solomon's Treasure: The Magic and Mystery of America's Money and Mind Controlled Sex Slaves and the CIA, a harrowing collection of essays on the hideous legacy of Operation Paperclip (which brought Nazi spies to the US) and MK-Ultra, the CIA mind control program run by Sidney Gottlieb, the man that Psi pioneer Russell Targ called "America's Josef Mengele."

Readers of The Secret Sun know that I view the historical claims of ancient scripture and mythology primarily from an AAT/Interventionist perspective. But I also want to present alternative views from scholars and researchers whom I respect and have been influenced by and Tracy tops that list. The topic at hand is Gnostic creation myths and "aliens." Like a lot of Secret Sun readers, Tracy approaches this material from a more mystical, occultist viewpoint than my more pragmatic, nuts-and-bolts take (which I admit is a bit out of favor these days), but also offers some fascinating insights from years of serious research. So let's get into it....
CK- Biblical scholar Bart Ehrman believes that the Gnostics were not converted Pagans but disillusioned Apocalyptic Jews. They began to see the promise of Jehovah's saving his people from their oppressors as being broken after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. They called Yahweh "Yaldaboath" and created a new host of fallen demiurges like the blind idiot god Samael.
Yahweh in the Book of Exodus could be interpreted as an alien being in a classic cigar-shaped flying craft. And his behavior in the early books in the Bible (commanding his followers to rape and murder children, for example) is nothing at all like the more spiritually-evolved figure in the prophetic books, particularly after the Babylonian captivity.

Tracy: Well, I wouldn't want to say that the Bible is telling UFO stories. That would be backwards, wouldn't it? Because the Bible is old and UFO stories are fairly new. I am more likely to believe that the modern myth of UFOs and grey aliens is a recent manifestation of an ancient religious archetype, rather than to say that the religious archetype is just a garbled memory of aliens.

In other words, the flying saucers in the alien stories are modern man's way of expressing a concept and an experience that is as ancient as civilization. Just like you see modern superheroes as manifestations of ancient god-forms. You would not say that this is evidence that ancient man really worshipped comic book superheroes.

"Alien" just means something outside of our normal experience. I recognize that many people have encounters with unexplained phenomena, including things that they describe as aliens in flying saucers from other planets. Other people describe encounters with angels, demons and ghosts. It is impossible to make a judgment about the validity of most of these stories, how much of the experience was purely internal, or how much of it happened in physical reality. All we can be sure of is that the same sorts of stories have always been told, and indeed this is the subject of most of the world's oldest stories.

That said, I agree with you to a certain point. Clearly, the Bible describes beings (Watchers, Angels, etc) that are capable of taking physical form and mating with humans. The offspring are described as being quite different from the rest of humanity. Specifically they are described as being "giants."

This meshes with myths from other cultures as well. They seem to have otherworldly qualities too: like blinding white skin, piercing red eyes, and enigmatic, hypnotic magnetism. In some cases they do take people for trips to the various "heavens."
This might seem similar to alien abductions scenarios. And of course, the megalithic wonders of the ancient world could have been built by aliens using technology instead of being built by giants or gods, as our ancestors claimed they were.

Then you have Kabbalistic stories and Gnostic creation myths about God and the Devil mating with humans (God mates with Lilith, God rapes Eve, Samael mates with Eve, Lilith mates with Adam, etc.). So then the obvious question arises: are God and the Devil aliens too?

Fact is, I just don't know if we are talking about aliens from another planet. My gut instinct is that this is an oversimplification. But then again there may be some truth to it. Like I think I said in my previous answer to one of your questions last year, if the aliens had to cross the universe to get here, they'd probably have to travel inter-dimensionally, and that takes the concept of an alien to a whole other level I think. Then they are more akin to our current conception of gods.

And maybe they did come down from "the heavens" and give us a head start on civilization thousands of years ago. Maybe even did some interbreeding and genetic engineering. But who taught them how to do that? Who gave them a head-start on civilization? Does that negate the concept of God as a spiritual being or as the creator of the universe? I don't think so. I just think that gods and demons (and perhaps aliens) are way more complicated than any theory that anyone has ever come up with.

If I drew a circle on the ground and evoked Ialdaboath into visible manifestation inside of the circle would you say that he was an "extraterrestrial mortal being" or a "spiritual entity"? Do you deny that it is possible to do this? Because there is no doubt in my mind that all religious scripture is describing interaction with higher beings on a spiritual level. That's part of the definition of religion. And I have no doubt that religion works: all religion works, in my opinion. But sometimes people interact with their gods on a physical level as well. Yet if we are dealing with transcendent beings, then they can probably manifest on any level they want to. Mormons certainly see no distinction between the heavens in outer space and spiritual Heaven.

I suppose aliens from another planet, manipulating our world inter- dimensionally, could be doing all of this. Allen Greenfield wrote about this possibility in Secret Cipher of the UFOnauts. It seems there are quite a few people in modern times that have channeled beings which they believe to be aliens from another planet. I guess this all ties in with the so-called "Typhonian current" which appears to be a space alien interpretation of Aleister Crowley's writings, assuming that he was channeling an alien when he wrote The Book of the Law.

I think it was the Thule Society in Germany that used to have seances where they channeled Sumerian gods. They believed that these gods came from outer space, but at the same time they believed that they could commune with them spiritually. And the gods gave them instructions for how to build flying saucers. These diagrams ended up in the hands of Nazi scientists who went about trying to create them. Then after WWII all of the sudden everyone was talking about UFOs and aliens.

My take on UFOs, after having had all these years to think about it, is this: Most sightings of UFOs (those that haven't been thoroughly debunked as something else) are probably sightings of experimental military aircraft. I think that during the 50s and 60s, the US intelligence community purposely floated stories of human interaction with aliens, particularly stories that indicated the US government had a secret alliance with aliens. The Soviet Union also floated similar stories. This was just psychological warfare. They were trying to scare each other and waste each other's intelligence resources with red herrings.

It was part of what led to the space race. Both the US and the Soviets were afraid that the other side was going to get the upper hand in space, and be able to launch missiles from there. So they needed to get up there right away and make sure that didn't happen. They also needed to make sure that there weren't any aliens up there.

It seems to me that the UFO hype has really died down in the last 20 years, in direct relation to the relaxing of hostilities with Russia, along with the explosion of satellite technology. There are still unexplained sightings of things (which could still be experimental aircraft and other fringe technology experiments). But there are fewer abduction stories and supposed "government informants" coming out to tell all. Because the government is no longer hiring people to do this for them.

But could our gods be aliens? Sure, I suppose. I think we are dealing with a complete unknown here. If you are praying to something, or channeling it, it's like talking to a stranger through a screen. You have no idea what's on the other side. And if it appears to you physically, and seems to interact with you physically, you're still just seeing and feeling what it wants you to see and feel. So maybe it wants you to think of it at various times as a god or an alien, depending on what suits you, or what suits its purposes.

We shouldn't assume that they would ever be benevolent enough to tell us the truth or to show us their true form. But for some reason, they seem to want to involve us in their intramural disputes.

They want us to take sides: to worship them, to hate their enemies, and to hate the followers of their enemies as well. And thus we end up hating each other.

CK- Do we have evidence in the Gnostic texts of any of the heavenly host as being possible extraterrestrial mortal beings as opposed to being spiritual entities? There are plenty of examples you can cite in the Old Testament, but are there any such parallels in the Gnostic literature?

And further; Could someone infer that Yaldaboath was a renegade alien who rebelled against a larger alien hierarchy, which is why he and his followers fled to the desert for several decades?
The Gnostic interpretation of creation rightly interprets the story of Genesis as a fight amongst the gods over who was "first." And the Gnostics took sides with a different character in that drama than the Jews did. They saw the creator god as having himself been created by someone else, and said that he was insane for believing otherwise, or was "rebelling" against the true hierarchy by proclaiming himself the one true god.

But I think they got this information through channeling, which is how I think the Torah began as well. So I don't look at Genesis and the Gnostic creation stories as history, really, any more than I would the Delphic Oracles. It's myth and prophecy, and while I'm sure it must contain some residual memory of things that happened to ancient man in the distant past, it would be impossible to determine the "truth" about any of it. Certainly we would never be able to determine the truth about which god came "first" or who is the rightful heir to whatever. In the case of Genesis, it seems like we are discussing events outside of linear time anyway.

But to get back to your specific question: Yes, it seems to me that Yahweh was one of several gods, all together in a family dynasty, who at one point overthrew the existing hierarchy to proclaim himself the one true god, just as Zeus overthrew the Titans in the Greek myth.

This is spelled out pretty explicitly in the Gnostic creation stories, but there are many traces of it in Genesis as well. Perhaps this is why, in the Bible, God always favors the younger sons of his chosen people instead of the eldest, rightful heirs to the family blessing (Seth over Cain, Isaac over Ishmael, Jacob over Esau, etc.) He will even allow them to resort to subterfuge to get it. It's a family tradition. And yes, I think the patriarchs were "children of God", quite literally. You can choose to see Yahweh as an alien if you wish.

Huh? Battlestar at the UN?

Here's a surprise:
Fantasy and reality will collide Tuesday night at the United Nations, as writers and actors from the Sci Fi Channel’s hit “Battlestar Galactica” meet UN representatives to discuss issues such as human rights, children and armed conflict, and terrorism. Also on the agenda: dialogue among different civilizations and faiths. The meeting happens just days before the two-hour final episode of the show airs Friday. - CNN

The missus and I were just discussing BSG last night, wondering if we should place it on our DVD wish-list. The few eps I've seen are well-done, if not a bit heavy-handed. One thing I will say about the show is that it very much ties into this trend of social militarization that we see on recent Star Trek spinoffs. One can't help but wonder- is this part of a process to condition us for a future in which universal conscription becomes a reality?

Cleopatra was part-African

Cleopatra, the last Egyptian Pharaoh, renowned for her beauty, was part African, says a BBC team which believes it has found her sister's tomb.

Queen Cleopatra was a descendant of Ptolemy, the Macedonian general who ruled Egypt after Alexander the Great. But remains of the queen's sister Princess Arsinoe, found in Ephesus, Turkey, indicate that her mother had an "African" skeleton.

Experts have described the results as "a real sensation." The discovery was made by Hilke Thuer of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

"It is unique in the life of an archaeologist to find the tomb and the skeleton of a member of Ptolemaic dynasty," she said.- BBC

Those Busy, Busy Skies...

The Ides of March is the day when Julius Caesar became Osiris. And after several "delays," the Discovery was launched at 1943 EST, en route to the ISS (aka ISiS). 1+9+4+3=17, of course. The mission will run 13 days instead of the originally scheduled 14. Speaking of martyred kings, the mission was originally supposed to have launched on Abraham Lincoln's birthday.

Our Gods Wear Spandex, Indeed

Well, this is fascinating: The DC series Trinity (meaning Supes, Bats and Wondie) is apparently weekly now. Three covers from last month pictured the three heroes of the Trinity as stained-glass icons surrounded by votive candles.

And then there's this cover of Superman by Alex Ross that does the father/son version of Pieta that we looked at in the Obam the Hawk update-a-thon....

Fascinating. You know I've taken some heat from some fanboys for my musings on superheroes as our new gods, but I'm seeing this meme playing out all over the place lately...

Subtlety, thy name is DARPA

Secret Sun reader Druff pointed out this hilarity:

Pentagon plans blimp to spy from new heights

The giant dirigible would use radar to closely and constantly monitor activity on the ground from 65,000 feet.

The Air Force has signed an agreement with DARPA to develop a demonstration dirigible by 2014. The prototype will be a third as long as the planned surveillance craft -- known as ISIS, for Integrated Sensor Is the Structure, because the radar system will be built into the structure of the ship.

In related orbital news, we see this story: Supermodel satellite set to fly

The super-sleek spacecraft will go into orbit on a modified intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in north-west Russia.

Most satellites launched into space are ugly boxes. The European Space Agency's (Esa) Goce satellite is very different.

"This is the most beautiful satellite that has ever been built - and for good reason," enthused one of the scientists who conceived the mission, Reiner Rummel, from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

Superman = 317

As in $317,000:

A rare copy of the first Superman comic, dating from 1938, has sold at auction for $317,200 (£227,000).

The online auction started two weeks ago and attracted 89 bidders. Neither the buyer nor the seller were named.

The copy was described as unrestored. The cover shows the cape-wearing action hero from the planet Krypton lifting a car above his head. -Beeb

The Lincoln Meme in the Book of Secrets

When exactly was the fix put in for Barackobamun? I thought National Treasure 2 was pretty weak compared to the original (which I still need to really dig into on the Sun), but it just occurred to me that the whole film was rocking the Lincoln meme in a hardcore fashion. The Mesoamerican meme synchs up with the Indiana Jones synchfest (minus Cate, alas). Now I have to rent the damn thing again. Thank God for Redbox.

"A Step Closer to Reading the Mind"

Borg Cube, here we come:

Scientists say for the first time they have understood someone's thoughts by looking at what their brain is doing.

The hippocampus is widely known to be integral to memory, but researchers say they now see just how images are stored and recalled in this part of the brain...

Neurons in the hippocampus, also known as "place cells", activate when we move around to tell us where we are.

The team, based at University College London, then used specialised scanning equipment which measures changes in blood flow in the brain. - BBC

Mass Hysteria in Central America

This is odd:

An outbreak of mass hysteria is reported to have struck three indigenous communities living near the river Coco in northern Nicaragua. A total of 43 people have reportedly fallen ill with what is known locally as grisi siknis ("crazy sickness"). Doctors, anthropologists and sociologists who have studied previous cases of mass hysteria – also known as mass psychogenic illness – have so far failed to come up with any clear explanation for the phenomenon.

If I were going to write a movie about aliens approaching Earth, I'd have these kinds of populations freaking out in response. It almost reminds me of Lovecraft in a way. Speaking of which, there's also this- Scientists searching for an "alien" shadow biosphere here on Earth.

While some researchers are attempting to create brand new life in the lab, others are searching for alien life on Mars and, eventually, elsewhere in the solar system. This burgeoning field of astrobiology has a less well-known offshoot right here on Earth: the search for a "shadow biosphere"- a second, independent form of life unrelated to sort we know

After all, many astrobiologists now think that given the right conditions any sufficiently complex molecular soup has a good chance of generating life if it simmers long enough. If that's so, it seems plausible that life may have arisen on Earth not once, but several times. New origins of life are unlikely today, because existing life would gobble up any aggregations of prebiotic molecules before they could edge over the threshold. However, opportunities for the origin of life may well have existed for long periods on the early Earth. Some of these origins may have been dead ends, out-competed by other life forms - but others could still be living among us, unnoticed.

Adam Gorightly on Binall of America

Longtime high priest of high weirdness Adam Gorightly is interviewed in a recent Binall of America podcast discussing his new book on James Shelby Downard, the legendary conspiracy theorist.

Judging from his autobiography, Downard was most likely a paranoid schizophrenic (Binnall and Gorightly seem pretty embarrassed by this inconvenient fact), so it's highly possible that he was exposed to Jungian analysis, perhaps when institutionalized. That's the first thing that occurred to me when reading about his work in Vankin's 50 (now 80) Greatest Conspiracies of All Time way back in the early 90s.

Cheers to Mike Clelland for the heads-up. 2007 Secret Sun entry on Downard here.

Rapture Riders

I'm sure a lot of serious Christians wish that someone informed Rachel Maddow that the "Rapture" concept was invented by colonial preachers (which is to say "corporate shills") in the 18th Century, and is rejected by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church and several other Christian denominations as having no real basis in Scripture. The "Pre-Tribulation Rapture" has even less and was created by the Plymouth Brethren cult, who also brought us that charming fellow named Aleister Crowley. Also, the word "Russia" is not mentioned once in any book in the Bible.

Here's the only Rapture I can endorse in good conscience...

No, I Haven't Seen Watchmen Yet...

...but this actress certainly caught my eye in the publicity materials. This is Malin Akerman, who plays Laurie Jupiter aka Silk Spectre. The synchs here are delicious- we've been mulling over Jupiter/Sagittarius symbology on the Secret Sun and "Aker" popped up on a word-verification code when I was responding to a post on Andre's site.

We have a whole host of rich symbols in motion here; Laurie being the feminine diminutive of Laurus (which relates to Apollo) coupled with Jupiter, lord of the heavens. "Spectre" is actually derived from "spectrum" which relates to light. Malin is derived from Magdalene, which ultimately brings us from Jupiter to Christ via Serapis. But Aker-Man is the truly juicy hit here.

In Egyptian mythology, Aker is the god of gates, symbolized by two lions or leopards, a motif we saw in relation to Inanna/Lilith on the Secret Sun.

As Egyptians believed that the gates of the morning and evening were guarded by Aker, they often placed statues of lions at the doors of their palaces and tombs. This was to guard the households and tombs from evil spirits and other malevolent beings. Sometimes they gave these statues the heads of men and women. The Greeks called this class of statuary, "Sphinxes."- egyptianmyths.net

Ah yes, back to the Cat-Woman. And since Aker is an earth god, back to Earth Akhet, since the two lions of Aker often bore the Akhet. So "Malin Akerman" leads us to the "Androgynous Keeper of the Gates of Dawn and Gnostic Bride of the Solar Redeemer."

Or something.

Gnostic Media Interviews Acharya S

Gnostic Media interviews the always thought-provoking DM Murdock aka Acharya S in their latest podcast. I hadn't heard of this podcast before but they seem to have a strong interest in entheogenic research, which syncs well with today's post on The Secret Sun. Acharya has a new book out on the Horus-Jesus connection, which draws on some of her ideas presented in Zeitgeist.

For what it's worth, I think that a lot of these connections are drawn not from the classical Egyptian mysteries, but from later cults in that wacky era of promiscuous syncretism in the early centuries of the Christian era, when all of these solar cults (including Christianity) were running around looking for converts and ripping each other off.

Additionally, my present thesis is that everything after the reign of Horus was a metaphysical corruption of a physical reality. Which is to say that I think Horus was a real person (after a fashion) who was later deified and absorbed the aspects of a whole host of other local sun, sky and war gods. But I'm nuts, so don't listen to me.

Right or wrong, love her or hate her, Acharya is always passionate and lucid and way smarter than any of us. Plus, she always pisses the right people off. So go listen.

The Religion of No Religion

More Americans Say They Have No Religion

Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey.

Northern New England surpassed the Pacific Northwest as the least religious region, with Vermont reporting the highest share of those claiming no religion, at 34 percent. Still, the study found that the numbers of Americans with no religion rose in every state.

This means that numbers of unchurched outnumber Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Hindus, Buddhists, and Mainline Protestants. Interesting.

What a Boring World This Would Be...

...without the gay community. As we are punched in the face daily by an avalanche of bad news- and bad vibes- it's good to see that someone out there is still celebrating. Hot on the heels of Carnival/Mardi Gras was the Sydney Mardi Gras, which started out as a gay civil rights march and has now become a citywide party for Australians of every possible persuasion. The theme was something vaguely global but the real issue seemed to be taking on homophobia in the Muslim world (finally), a worthy cause for any occasion.

There's something indelibly pagan about Mardi Gras in general and the Sydney Mardi Gras in particular. Indeed, after brutally repressing the Bacchanalias in 186 BC, the Romans later reinvented them as exactly these kinds of parades/festivals. If that was considered the acceptable alternative you can just imagine how dangerous the original rituals were.

And these kinds of pageants have always been a way for marginalized communities to let off steam. Perhaps as all of us are made to feel marginalized and alienated we'll see these kinds of celebrations go mainstream.
